I’m heading over to Mom and Dad’s this past weekend and Mom says, “Why don’t you stop by Krispy Kreme and pick up a dozen doughnuts on your way?” She had given me a fundraiser coupon for just this occasion. I live near a Krispy Kreme. I can bring her fresh doughnuts.
I don’t typically drive by the Krispy Kreme. Maybe that is to avoid the temptation when the “Hot Doughnuts Now” sign is lit up. But U-turns have been made for a hot doughnut that never makes it out of the parking lot. I mean, the point of buying a doughnut when the sign is on is to eat the doughnut while it’s hot. Not wait until you get home and it’s cold. Duck Donuts is another establishment that appeals to us folks with doughnut issues. They make their doughnuts to order. Maybe I’ll write another post about my love-hate relationship with Duck Donuts. They may be the best doughnuts on earth. But, they are different from Krispy Kreme, so I shall not detract from the topic of this post.
So, I drive to Krispy Kreme and lo and behold the sign is on. Not only am I going to pick up a dozen doughnuts – I’m getting a dozen hot doughnuts. I spent three days last week eating raw veggies and fruits trying to rid my body of sugar. And now I was about to infuse my blood with a super dose of sweetness. I order the dozen and the sales clerk goes to the back and plucks 12 hot doughnuts straight from the conveyor belt. Dripping with icing.
I am tempted to eat one right away, but I wait. The 20 minute drive to my parents’ house is pure torture. But the doughnuts are safe in the back seat – out of arm’s reach. I arrive and carry the box to the backyard – “Does anyone want a doughnut?” No, we’ll wait. But then I say, “They’re still hot!” And no one resists. It almost melts in your mouth. So much for the sugar detox. I took 2 doughnuts home with me for a treat another day.
